Battery storage: The power of the future at the heart of the electricity grid – a flexible solution for the energy market and society

Article

Interest in investing in battery storage has increased sharply in a short period of time, which is largely based on both technology, energy market and societal developments. There are a number of different revenue and savings opportunities linked to owning and managing battery storage, and the economic impact gain depends on the benefit that the battery intends to deliver.

Battery storage can be seen as a flexibility resource that can contribute with different types of benefits at different levels in the electricity grid. For an electricity network owner, this can for example be about frequency regulation, voltage support, dead grid start-up, load control and postponing investments in the networks. For actors connected to the electricity grid, battery storage can, for example, create benefits by delivering support services to the electricity grid, increasing the self-use of renewable energy, cutting power peaks and acting as backup power.

A battery storage facility can thus be used as a supporting resource in the support service market for frequency regulation, generating revenue by the battery being available for activation (of outlets and input of energy) during times when the electricity grid needs it.

Batteries also create benefits in combination with wind and solar farms as it creates the opportunity to store production surplus that can be used at a later date. Charging infrastructure can also be advantageously combined with battery storage to reduce the power peaks when charging electric cars and reduce dependence on the electricity price at the time of charging.

Energy storage in buildings can be used to increase self-use of renewable energy and cut power peaks, which in turn affect electricity costs for the property owner.

Furthermore, backup power is a way to secure the electricity supply in the event of a power outage, something that is seen as increasingly important among socially important activities, and for this too, batteries can be used to secure the supply of electricity.
