The National Archives (Riksarkivet), in collaboration with the Swedish Tax Agency and Specialfastigheter, will build a new archive of about 35,000 square meters in Härnösand. Here, part of the country’s collective memory and cultural heritage will be preserved for future generations.

As a public authority, the National Archives has existed for over 400 years. The archives have grown slowly but surely and today comprise 75 miles of shelves and documents. The new archive provides space for an additional 250 km of shelves. With a usable area of 32,985 sqm, it will be Sweden’s largest archive building by far.

The main building is designed with two functional parts. The archive section will be built in concrete that will be docked together with an office building and visitor area in wood. In addition, a detached technical building of 738 sqm will be created that will contain backup power, switchgear, transformers, cooling machines and a fire tank.

Rejlers’ assignment has included work on carrying out investigations, program documents, system documents and construction documents for the execution contract. In addition to the consultant group for design, our commitment also includes roles such as main project manager, project manager and control manager.

Two authorities under the same roof

The project is being conducted in collaboration between the tenants the National Archives, the Swedish Tax Agency and the developer Specialfastigheter. The National Archives’ existing operations will move to the new building and the Tax Agency will also take its place with a new central archive and mail management. A total of 120 people will work in the premises. The archive is also open and accessible to the public.
